I took my first Crochet project with Mae Dickson, our crochet instructor at the store and we came up with a baby blanket for my friend Michelle. Michelle is due to have a baby in May and her shower was a few weeks ago. I am writing the blog now, so I wouldn’t give away the surprise. For me part of knitting or crocheting a project is thinking about the person I am gifting it to and so it’s fun knitting it for them. So the shower and the class came happily together to serve two purposes; learning how to crochet and coming up with something to welcome a cute little baby into the world.
So, a few balls of Debbie Bliss’ Cashmerino Aran later, here we are:

The shower was beautiful as was the Mama-to-be and I loved giving her this beautiful blanket. Crochet is really fast and sucks up so much more yarn than knitting. The blanket went from here to Hilton Head on vacation and back again. It was a good project and I am looking forward to Crochet 102.

It’s still raining - not sure whether spring is going to make it this year. Just heard on the radio that the bears in the Tahoe area came out, saw all the snow in the ground and went right back into their caves. Don’t you wish you could do that too?
Without having seen spring and summer, it seemed odd this morning to start ordering fall yarns. But there were beautiful yarns on the horizon especially from Rowan. They will start coming into the store in August/September but until then we shall dream of them. Meanwhile of course, we continue to look for things to cheer us up. Dr. Patricia Dailey was one of first customers and came into the store the other day wearing one of her own creations, giving us a chance to oohh and aahh over it.

Yes, I know the picture is small and tiny but you’ll have to make do with that for now. It’s actually a major victory because I was able to take a picture with my new digital camera, get the pictures into my computer and then actually copy the picture (or thumbnail?) into my blog. Hah!! So, needless to say even though the skies are grey, spring is here, I declare!

When you own your own yarn store, one of the best parts is finding new yarns, especially the delicious ones that you are rare. We’ve been having such a good time receiving all these new yarns that we’ve forgotten to tell you all about them. Among the yarns that we’ve gotten in the last month: Tilli Tomas
By far the most intriguing new yarn. There are several varieties that come pre-beaded or pre-sequined or pre-crystalled. And we’re talking Swarovski crystals - check out their Mariel’s Crystals. Also check out Rock Star, Disco Lights and Salt and Pepper. We also rounded off the collection with matching plain silk (did I mention the beads, sequins and crystals are strung on silk) called Pure and Simple.
I wish I could take some pictures and send them to you. Yes, I did just get a new digital camera too. But I’m still trying to figure how to actually transfer the pictures to the computer. No, don’t send me email - I think I can figure this out for myself. Just need some extra time. Meanwhile make do with the pictures from the Tilli Tomas Website.
Another interesting yarn is Noro’s Tidiori - but I really do have to show you a picture of what it knits up like. It’s simply unbelievable, in a good kind of way. We got DellaQ Bags for carrying around your pretty knitting projects and looking pretty all the time. We also got complete new lines of yarn from Karabella, Bellasoft, new lines from Schaefer, new lines from Adrienne Vittadini. Let me not forget Art Yarns….oh, Art Yarns. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.
Next time - pictures.

We’ve been busy at Nine Rubies putting together our new class schedule for April and May and even some June dates.
Ada Lai is now teaching a Sock knitting class on Circular needles that met with a great reception even before I got a chance to put the class on the web site. Merry Schiff is going to be teaching a Felted Bags class - the fantastically cute and wholesome Booga Bag is the class project - even I want to make one of those.
Mae Dickson and I continue to teach the basic crochet and knitting classes - we’ve also expanded the class offerings in this area.
We’re still working on adding more classes as fast we can put them together. Hope to see you all at one of classes in the near future.
