Sock Designer Workshop - Cookie AÂ Â
Saturday, November 1st, 2008
We’re delighted that the renowned sock designer Cookie A. (creator of the uber popular Monkey socks) will be here to share her expertise and experiences with our many sock-knitting enthusiasts. We’ll be offering two different workshops, so there’s an opportunity for all levels of sock knitters to learn from one of the hottest designers in the country!
Workshop #1 Toe-Up Socks with Gusset (10 am - 1 pm)
$60 (plus materials)
Who says toe-up socks have to use a short row heel? Knitters with high insteps will be pleased to learn that it’s just as easy to knit a toe-up sock with a gusset as it is to knit one top-down. Students will learn how to provisionally cast on, a yarn over short row method, how to use short rows to create a toe-up sock with gusset and heel flap, and how to do the sewn bind off. Students will complete one baby-sized bootie with all the elements of a sock in class.
Materials required: Worsted weight yarn and size 7 DPNs, two circular needles or one long circular needle for magic loop.
Pre-requisites: Knitting, purling, working in the round
Workshop #2 Traveling Stitches (2 pm -Â 5 pm)
$60 (plus materials)
Learn how to add curves and angles to your knitting by using traveling stitches. We will go over the different methods for making stitches travel, effects on the fabric, and how to incorporate traveling stitches into a basic knitting pattern.
Materials required: Yarn and appropriate sized needles. Swatches can be worked flat or in the round - student’s choice.
Pre-requisites: Knitting, purling, increasing and decreasing
A Day of Lace: Designer Workshop and Trunk Show - Rosemary Hill
- 1Â Session:
- Saturday, July 12th, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
- Price: $75 (supplies additional)
Do you look at lace patterns and say “I wish I could do that”? Maybe you wonder “Why do people love Rowan Kidsilk Haze? It looks so hard to work with.” What about the beads? Do you say “Gee, that’s out of my league.”? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, we have the perfect class for you.
Designer Rosemary (Romi) Hill is coming to Nine Rubies to teach all the ins and outs of lace knitting with beads. Her workshop will teach easy to intermediate techniques to make the stunning Knitty Ice Queen. You’ll learn to read charts, work a provisional cast-on, the Russian join, working with beads and picot cast off. Romi will also share some valuable lace-knitting tips and tricks (including how to knit in the round without twisting stitches, how to use stitch markers, lifelines, and more.)
Swallowtail Shawl - First Lace Project
- 3 Sessions - $75 (Supplies Additional)
- Tuesdays, July 8th, 22nd, and 29th, 6 pm - 8 pm
Evelyn A. Clark is a lace genius, and one of her most popular projects is the Swallowtail Shawl. It was first published in Interweave Knits in the Fall of 2006, and it was recently voted one of the 5 most popular patterns that have ever been in the magazine.
Many lace projects are very complex, but Swallowtail is one of those wonderful projects that look much more difficult than it actually is. We’ll be teaching all the techniques you need to complete this spectacular shawl: learn how to read charts, use a provisional cast on, work increases and decreases, create the signature nupps (akin to a bobble but in a lightweight yarn), work with fine gauge yarns, block your project, and more.
Pre-requisites: must know how to knit and purl. Experience with increasing and decreasing (in heavier yarns) a plus.
Materials: please do not buy your yarn prior to the first class. The instructor will review yarn weights and help you select the right weight for you. Bring several circular needles with you (sizes 4-6) to the first class so you can work with whichever yarn you choose. The pattern will be provided.
